One in four children in Northeast Louisiana face hunger.
The Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana partners with dozens of local schools to provide food for children at risk of going hungry during weekends and breaks when school meals aren’t available.
Closing the Meal Gap
The BackPack Program provides children with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations.
By offering healthy, kid-friendly foods to bring home and share with their families, we give local children a better opportunity to succeed in and out of the classroom.
How does it work?
Each child on the program discreetly receives a bag of food in their own backpack before school gets out for the weekend or holiday breaks.
Every BackPack food bag is filled with kid-friendly food items for healthy meals and snacks to help sustain them until school resumes on Monday.
A typical BackPack includes two cereals, two entrees, a snack, fruit juice, and shelf-stable milk.
Each bag is made possible through generous donations from our community.
With your help, we can provide food to more children in need.
Help Us Expand Our Reach
We currently provide BackPacks to over 900 children each week through partnerships with 26 schools in three Louisiana Parishes – Lincoln, Jackson, and Ouachita.
