Life off the Highway

Truck drivers are often referred to as the backbone of America. For Tidie, being a truck driver was more than just a job, it was his way of life. He proudly drove for Sol’s Pipe & Steel for over 20 years.

Tidie retired in 2021 and has been spending his retirement resting and focusing on his health. Because of how much it costs while living on a single person’s income, Tidie faces the possibility of not being able to afford his medications and the groceries he needs after paying his monthly bills.

“I try not to spend much, but my mortgage takes up a lot of my budget,” he told us. “I have to start stretching at the end of the month.”

A friend recommended Tidie visit a local pantry for help. He went to a Food Bank food pantry distribution in West Monroe and received a collection of nutritious groceries. Tidie now uses the Food Bank as a source of support when finances get tight.

“It helps me a-lot,” he said. “When I get a decent amount of food, it can last me almost three weeks.”

Tidie’s goal is to find a health care provider that features more affordable medication prices so he can continue to improve his health.
