East Carroll Parish has one of the highest poverty rates in the country.

Gertrude says the COVID-19 pandemic has made it even more difficult for her and her neighbors to make ends meet.

“Most of us need the food, especially since the pandemic began,” she said.

Gertrude visits the Food Bank’s partner agency in East Carroll Parish each month. She says she’s been able to balance her fixed income to pay her utility bills on time because of it.

“It saves me money,” she said. “It allows me to focus on my bills.”

Gertrude uses the groceries like fresh dairy, produce, and proteins that she receives from the Food Bank to cook nutritious meals for her and her family.

“We have small children to feed, and this is a big help,” she said.
