What is Hunger Action Month?
Hunger Action Month is a nationwide campaign led by Feeding America dedicated to raise awareness about food insecurity and inspire community members to take action against hunger.
Why does it matter?
Knowing the problem is half the solution. Bringing awareness to food insecurity in our community can spark a combined effort to help alleviate it. The issue of hunger hits close to home in Northeast Louisiana because we have some of the worst poverty and hunger statistics in the country.
- 1 in 5 people experience food insecurity (6th highest in the nation)
- 1 in 3 children struggle with hunger (tied for 1st in the nation)
- 14 percent of seniors in Louisiana are food insecure (1st in the nation)
Food insecurity has been linked to poorer health outcomes, negatively impacts child development, and contributes to mental health issues. A well-fed community, is a stronger community.
How can I help if it’s just me?
You can take action against hunger in our community by supporting the Food Bank in one of the following ways:
- Volunteer – Help pack food boxes, build boxes or sort and distribute food
- Attend a Food Bank Event – Visit one of the following events and 10% of sales will be donated to the Food Bank!

- 9/17/24: Newk’s Eatery West Monroe Fundraiser between 5pm-8pm – 811 Splane Dr, West Monroe, LA 71291
- 9/17/24: Dilla’s Quesadillas Fundraiser 10am-10pm – 1003 Cooktown Rd, Ruston, LA 71270
- 9/24/24: Newk’s Eatery Ruston Fundraiser between 5pm-8pm – 301 S Vienna St, Ruston, LA 71270
- Host a Food Drive – Collect nonperishable foods to donate to the Food Bank
- Make a Donation – Make a gift to the Food Bank’s Virtual Food Drive. Every $1 provides groceries for 4 meals
How can my organization help?
Supporting the Food Bank is a fantastic opportunity for your organization to make an impact in the community while having a fun team building experience! Your organization can make a financial donation, schedule a volunteer event or host a food drive at your location!
- Volunteer – Work as a team with up to 25 of your employees to pack, sort or distribute food
- Donate Funds – Your organization can make a financial donation to support the Food Bank and its programs
- Donate Food – Host a food drive among your coworkers and customers at your organization’s location
